Kate Middleton read a CBeebies Bedtime Story on Sunday, 13th February. For the segment, she wore a casual outfit comprising of a cosy jumper and jeans (full outfit details below).
Here’s an extract from the TV special:
For the Bedtime Story, the Duchess chose to read The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, first published in 1968 by Jill Tomlinson. The book tells the tale of Plop, the Baby Barn Owl who overcomes his fear of the dark. Here’s the synopsis via Amazon:
A heart-warming classic full of animal antics by Jill Tomlinson.
Plop, the Baby Barn Owl, is like every Barn Owl there ever was, except for one thing – he is afraid of the dark. “Dark is nasty” he says and so he won’t go hunting with his parents. Mrs Barn Owl sends him down from his nest-hole to ask about the dark and he meets a little boy waiting for the fireworks to begin, an old lady, a scout out camping, a girl who tells him about Father Christmas, a man with a telescope and a black cat who takes him exploring. He realizes that through these encounters that dark is super after all.
Filled with gentle humour and comfort, Jill Tomlinson’s animal stories have been enjoyed by children who want to snuggle down with a good read for decades. This edition of The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark is beautifully illustrated by Paul Howard.

Apparently, Kate enjoyed the book during her childhood and she now reads the story to her own children, George, Charlotte and Louis.
The Duchess’s guest spot on the show marks the closing of Children’s Mental Health Week:
Children’s Mental Health Week is a key national moment for spotlighting and recognising children’s mental health.

The book she chose fits with this year’s theme:
This year, children and adults are being encouraged to consider how they have grown emotionally, recognising that trying new things can help people move beyond their comfort zones, and that challenges and setbacks can help them to mature and adapt.

The Duchess joins a long list of famous faces who have filmed stories for the segment, including Tom Hardy, Suranne Jones, David Tennant, Chris Evans and more…
The special segment was filmed at Kensington Palace back in January.
Kate’s outfit for CBeebies Bedtime Story:
The Duchess filmed the bedtime story wearing a casual ensemble. She wore a cosy roll-neck sweater with a pair of blue jeans.
The sweater is by Holland Cooper. It’s the British company’s Fair Isle Knit in cream. The piece is made from a super soft wool-alpaca mix yarn. It features a Fair Isle knitted border design in burgundy and grey tones. The piece is finished with gold buttons on the cuffs and shoulders.
Sadly, the cream roll-neck sweater is now sold out. (I believe it was sold out before the photo of Kate appeared—but don’t quote me on that!) You can still purchase the knit in black or soft grey though. RRP: £179.
UPDATE: Jade Holland Cooper confirms the brand will restock the cream Fair Isle sweater soon.
Holland Cooper is a luxury British brand that produces timeless clothes for women. The company mix heritage fabrics with contemporary design.
Kate’s worn a few items from Holland Cooper in the past. Here’s a quick peek at her wearing the company’s Shirt Bodysuit, Marlborough Trench, Black Twill Blazer and Double Breasted Coat in Blackwatch Tartan:
Kate paired the roll-neck sweater with a pair of blue jeans. She could be wearing her & Other Stories Favourite Cut jeans.
We saw the Duchess wear the jeans twice in 2021. First, to receive her covid vaccination in May and then one month later during a visit to the Urban Nature Project at the Natural History Museum.
Below, the image on the left shows Kate wearing the jeans. Note the & Other Stories logo on the button (same as the stock image in the centre) and the rivets on the pocket (shown on the stock image on the right).
& Other Stories sell the Favourite Cut jean in two leg lengths: cropped and standard. There’s 6cm difference between each pair. A lot of people think the Duchess wears the cropped version.
It’s difficult to say exactly which shade of blue Kate’s wearing. If she wears the cropped version, then I’d say she’s probably wearing them in ‘acid wash’ (which does seem to match with the vaccination photo). The standard leg length comes in ‘acid, ‘light blue’, and ‘pale blue’.
The Favourite Cut Jeans are crafted from organic cotton and offer a high waist with a slim leg and comfortable stretch. All the zippers, threads, buttons and rivets have been sustainably sourced.
& Other Stories is part of the same group as H&M. The company describe itself as a “one-stop styling destination filled with collections from three design ateliers in Paris, Stockholm and Los Angeles”.
To date, we’ve only seen Kate in one other item from the brand. A multicoloured floral dress:
Kate wore her pink and gold Missoma Mini Pyramid Charm Hoop Earrings to read the bedtime story.
The pretty earrings feature a hand-cut Rhodochrosite gemstone set in 18ct gold vermeil on Sterling silver suspended from a hoop. The gold vermeil surrounding the gemstone has a rough, organic texture while a repeating pyramid pattern decorates the hoops.
Kate’s worn the earrings on six public engagements to date. She also owns a second pair by the British brand: The Zenyu Chandelier Hoops.
Missoma is a London-based brand that specialises in ‘demi-fine’ jewellery. It was founded by Marisa Horden, her sister Sophie and their mother Michele. The brand name combines letters from all three ladies’ names: Michele, Sophie, Marisa.

It’s always so nice to see Kate wearing high street brands. Makes trying to take inspiration from her so much easier!
