Kate Middleton Just Climbed Britain’s Three Highest Mountains To Raise Money for Cancer Charity

Kate Middleton has pulled off an extraordinary feat this weekend, taking on the “Three Peaks Challenge”—climbing the three highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales—in just 24 hours.

The Princess of Wales completed the endurance event to spread a message about life during and after cancer, and to raise donations for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

The charity raises money for The Royal Marsden, the hospital where she had her cancer treatment in 2024.

The Princess said she took on the gruelling challenge to “explore life beyond diagnosis and to give something back”.

Kate climbed all three of Britain’s highest peaks—Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) in Wales—a total walking distance of 23 miles (37km). The total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft).

She finished in Wales, where members of her family, including William, her three children, her parents and her brother, waited to celebrate her success.

The Princess took on the challenge alone, supported along the route by Mountain Rescue. According to Wikipedia, each mountain takes around five hours to climb and descend for a ‘standard strong walker’, and the drive time between the three mountains is approximately 10 hours. The Kensington Palace team drove the Princess between peaks across the three countries.

It’s believed Kate is the first member of the Royal Family to complete the Three Peaks.

The Princess posted to social media this evening, sharing a photo taken at the summit of Ben Nevis. The photo shows Kate wearing a cap, dressed in a raincoat, surrounded by fog, beside the trig stone that marks the mountain’s highest point.

In the accompanying message, Kate reflects on cancer as something that reaches beyond the body, affecting how a person thinks, feels and lives, too.

She makes the case for “holistic”, whole-person care that supports patients’ wellbeing and resilience alongside their medical treatment.

You might remember that Kate recently highlighted holistic care during a visit to the Manchester Cancer Centre, too.

The centre supports patients’ physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being by providing a range of holistic therapies to help alleviate symptoms common with diagnosis and treatment of cancer, including stress, depression, fear, worry and anxiety-induced nausea. I expect Kate hopes that this type of care can become widespread across the UK.

Kate closed her lengthy, personal social media message by writing about healing as a matter of finding balance rather than simply fixing what is wrong. She ends with a message to anyone living with the disease: “Please know you are not alone.”

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people in this country hear the words no one wants to hear. What follows is a path that tests every part of who we are: physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. The challenges ripple outwards, touching families, friendships, work and the quiet moments we spend alone with our thoughts.

Cancer doesn’t just affect the body. It changes how you think and feel and profoundly affects every aspect of life. I know this personally, and that the journey through and beyond treatment requires more than medicine alone.

I have taken on the National Three Peaks Challenge, not simply as a physical endeavour but as a chance to explore life beyond diagnosis and to give something back. The Royal Marsden is a place that holds great meaning for me and whose care and expertise are life changing for so many people.

Through this challenge, I want to raise awareness for the deeper impact of serious illness and the importance of holistic healthcare. Every individual is different, and ensuring there is a whole person approach to care enables those living through cancer to manage the deeply personal challenge of diagnosis. Holistic therapies complement clinical pathways and support patients’ ability to maintain their wellbeing, resilience and quality of life during an exceptionally difficult time.

We have an opportunity to reshape what the future of holistic cancer care looks like, enabling more people, nationwide, to access the kind of personalised support that can help make a meaningful difference during and after medical treatment.

This challenge will support the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, helping to transform access to, and understanding of, holistic care that will enhance recovery and healing for patients across the UK.

Healing, whether personal or collective, is not just about fixing what is wrong. It is about finding balance in how we live. Between effort and acceptance, between control and trust, between thinking and simply being. Because in the end, bravery isn’t just about pushing forward. It is about knowing how to stay grounded, connected and present, no matter the terrain, or landscape you are walking through.

Together, we can stand alongside everyone navigating life with cancer, ensuring no one faces this disease feeling unseen or unsupported.

Please know you are not alone.

The Princess of Wales

An hour or so later, the palace team uploaded a video to the Prince and Princess’s official social media accounts—captured before the challenge started—with Kate explaining her reasons for taking on the Three Peaks.

She says that it’s “partly personal” because she’s “so grateful to be here, to be strong enough to walk these hills”, before adding that “it’s really to give something back and acknowledge all the incredible work going on up and down this country.”
