Temperley London Stirling gingham dress in black & white

Kate Middleton owns Temperley London‘s Stirling midi dress—a sleeveless black-and-white gingham design with a square neckline and self-tie belt.

The Princess debuted the dress at the Royal Charity Polo Cup at Guards Polo Club on 10th July 2026.

Her appearance came just two days after founder Alice Temperley announced she is stepping away from the label—quite the moment for the Princess to return to a brand she favoured so often in her early royal years.

About the dress:

The Stirling is a sleeveless midi dress cut from a black-and-white gingham jacquard.

The piece features a square neckline, fitted bodice and a full skirt that falls to mid-calf, finished with a matching self-tie belt.

The dress comes from one of Temperley London’s past-season collections, believed to date to around 2019/20.

The label’s Stirling line—which also included a blazer and wide-leg trousers in the same check—drew on what Temperley described as vintage motorsports inspiration (the name surely a nod to racing legend Stirling Moss).

Where to buy:

As the dress is from an older collection, it’s no longer sold by Temperley London. Your best bet is the pre-owned market:

Kate Middleton and Temperley London:

Kate leaned heavily on Temperley London in her early royal years. She wore a white Temperley dress for her very first Wimbledon visit in 2011, chose the black lace Amoret gown for the War Horse premiere in 2012, and packed both the jade Desdemona lace dress and the Delphia top and skirt for the 2016 tour of India.

Before the polo, her last Temperley dress moment was the blue lace Eclipse midi, worn in October 2017, making the Stirling her first Temperley dress in almost nine years—a telling choice, given the week’s news from the brand.

She also wore a sweater from Temperley London in 2021.

About Temperley London:

Temperley London was founded in 2000 by Somerset-born designer Alice Temperley, a Royal College of Art graduate who received an MBE for services to fashion in 2011. The label built its name on romantic, bohemian British design—intricate embellishment, beautiful fabrics and feminine silhouettes.

In November 2023, Dubai-based Times Square Group acquired a majority stake in the business. Then, on 8th July 2026, the company confirmed that Alice Temperley is stepping away from the label she founded, with a new leadership team and design director to be announced. Alice plans to focus on a new independent creative venture.
