On the 8th of May 2020, William and Kate spoke with veterans enjoying a VE Day party at a Royal British Legion care home. The couple video-chatted with residents of the Mais House Care Home in Bexhill-On-Sea, in East Sussex. Of course, the royal engagement had to take place virtually as the country is still socially distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
For our readers around the world, VE Day is ‘Victory in Europe’ day. It marks the end of World War II in Europe. This year VE Day celebrates 75 years since the Allies formally accepted Nazi Germany’s surrender.
On this day, millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved ones, and to hope for the future. – Kensington Palace
During the chat, several Second World War veterans reminisced, telling William and Kate about their experiences of VE day 75-years-ago, and memories of the war itself:
Charles Ward, the oldest resident at Mais House, a Royal British Legion care home in Bexhill-on-Sea, reminisced about how he served tots of rum to fellow servicemen on VE Day. He said: ‘We were in Greece at the time, and I had to go round early in the morning with rum for all the men.’ William replied: ‘I bet you were the hero of the time there Charles, delivering rum out to everybody.’ – METRO.CO.UK
Thankfully, the care home has remained Coronavirus-free during the current crisis.
Kate’s outfit:
Kate chose a patriotic red dress for the video conference call. It’s difficult to know for certain, but it looks like her L.K. Bennett Cayla dress.
Kate first wore the Cayla dress to Wimbledon in 2015. The dress sold out within hours of her pictures appearing in the press.
The vibrant red dress features a flattering fit-and-flair silhouette, a midi-length skirt, boat neckline, elbow-length sleeves and seams that run down the front. The piece originally retailed for £250 on L.K. Bennett’s website.
Of course, the dress is no longer available to buy from L.K. Bennett. However, you can still find a couple of new and preloved listings on eBay.
Or, why not try the L.K. Bennett Luna dress? It’s currently reduced to £75 in the brand’s sale.
