Kate Middleton owns the Self Portrait Spearmint Chiffon Midi Dress.
She first wore the dress during a visit to The Bahamas in March 2022. I’d say it was one of her stand-out looks of the tour. She looked so fresh and stylish in the minty green frock.
It’s clear Kate and her team spend a great deal of time curating the perfect outfits ahead of royal tours. This pastel green dress ticks a lot of boxes: it’s perfect for the hot Caribbean weather with its light and floaty chiffon skirt. It’s stylish without stealing focus (the pin-tuck pleats, bust and hip seams, pearl buttons are unique but they’re not headline-grabbing. Important when Kate wants to keep the focus on her work). The mint green colour is eye-catching and on-trend but not too overwhelming.
Kate wore this Self-Portrait dress towards the end of the tour—the piece really stood out amid the rainbow of outfits she’d worn on the days prior.
The Duchess paired the pastel green frock with gold statement earrings by a local Bahamian designer and a pair of white Jimmy Choo pumps.
About the dress:
The mid-length dress is made from green chiffon. The bodice features pin-tucks and sculpting seams on the bust. There is also sculpting detail at the hips. The A-line skirt falls into soft pleats. The dress has short cuffed sleeves and a faux-pearl button-down front with a v-neckline. The pin-tucked waistband creates a flatting silhouette.
The Duchess swapped the faux pearl buttons for fabric-covered buttons.
I’d say this is a rare unicorn of a dress that works for both formal and less formal occasions. It’s obviously ideal for wedding season. This fact hasn’t escaped Grazia magazine who say it is “so suitable for your next nuptials that it might as well have your name on it”. I picture wearing it with one of Kate’s trademark chunky headbands, nude heels and a box clutch.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Kate re-wear the green dress in the Royal Box at Wimbledon later this year. Or, perhaps paired with one of her white hats at Ascot in the summer.
When off-duty (say, on holiday in Mustique), Kate could dress it down for dinner with a pair of espadrille wedges and a cross-body bag.
People magazine call the Self-Portrait Spearmint Midi an “ethereal spring dress” and say its bodice detailing is bang on trend—apparently, this “Regencycore” detail has been “blowing up on TikTok” since Bridgerton returned to Netflix (coincidentally, in the same week).
[No] detail on the dress was able to outshine that gorgeous bustier and underwire feature that falls right in line with the Regencycore trends that have been gaining so much traction since Bridgerton’s debut. The Self Portrait moment felt very (minty) fresh for Middleton — and we’re positive the sighting caused a spike in searches for bustier-style dresses.
