Kate Middleton’s State Banquet Look Was a Masterclass in Sartorial Diplomacy

The Princess wore a red caped dress by Sarah Burton for Givenchy at French State Banquet

This evening, the Princess of Wales attended her first state banquet since 2023.

She wore a dark red silk creponne evening gown with delicate cape-style draping, custom-designed by Sarah Burton for Givenchy. A British designer at the helm of a French house—a fittingly diplomatic choice for the occasion.

The Princess carried a coordinating evening clutch embroidered with lily of the valley. In France, the flower is strongly associated with good luck and renewal.

Kate completed the look with an array of honours and historic jewels.

As I predicted, she brought back the Lover’s Knot Tiara.

She also wore the ‘Greville’ diamond earrings that once belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Her insignia included the Royal Family Orders of both King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II, the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, and the GCVO sash and star.

She also wore the rosette of a Grand Officier of the L’ordre national du Mérite — a French order of merit — in a thoughtful gesture of sartorial diplomacy.

Sorry if you’re happening across this brief post. It’s late here, and I just wanted to get SOMETHING up on the blog. I’ll have a full update tomorrow.
