Kate Middleton’s looks elegant in chocolate brown & gold for meeting with new Archbishop

Kate Middleton looked elegant in a rich chocolate-brown ensemble for an audience with the New Archbishop of Canterbury on Thursday.

The Prince and Princess of Wales attended a private audience at Lambeth Palace with the newly appointed Archbishop Sarah Mullally.

It was the pair’s first official meeting with the Archbishop since her confirmation.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the role churches play in supporting communities across the country, as well as the Prince and Princess’s work through The Royal Foundation.

The visit followed Archbishop Sarah paying homage to His Majesty the King as Supreme Governor of the Church of England earlier in the week.

Kate’s outfit:

The princess chose a warm, tonal brown palette for the meeting.

I know a lot of royal followers are thinking “argh, not brown again”. (Kate’s favoured the colour recently, and she wore a lot of brown last year too.) It is beginning to feel noticeably repetitive. I’ve long suspected this is a conscious choice—I think she’s avoiding drawing excessive attention to individual outfits and trying to keep her fashion restrained, yet polished, for the bulk of her royal work. This ensures the emphasis naturally shifts towards the people she is meeting and the issues being discussed during an engagement.

I think she’s strategically reserving the striking colours and visual intrigue for moments of global focus, such as state visits and major ceremonial events.

A few details I particularly liked about this look: First, how the coat and skirt are hemmed to the same length, which gives the outfit a very neat, considered feel. Second, the fluid movement in both pieces—it’s especially noticeable on video. I also loved the necklace, a chunky gold piece that held its own beautifully against the rich brown palette. Here are the IDs:

COAT: The Princess debuted a chocolate brown coat by Catherine Walker & Co. It’s similar in style to the label’s Yves silhouette shown on their website (but it’s not exactly the same). Kate owns the same design in black and navy blue.

DRESS: Kate debuted another piece by Edeline Lee. She wears the designer’s ‘Jete Crop Dress in brown’.

TIGHTS/HOSE: Underneath the dress, Kate wore sheer brown tights/hose, which I think is a public first. (I don’t recall her wearing brown tights/hose before, but I could be mistaken.) Obviously, no ID for these, but I thought it was noteworthy enough to include.

HEELS: She rewore her Gianvito Rossi ‘Gianvito 105’ pumps in Chocolate Brown suede.

NECKLACE: The gorgeous heart necklace is by one of Kate’s favourite jewellers, Daniella Draper. She wears a ‘Keeper’s Heart’ pendant on the ‘Trace’ chain. I think Kate wears the ‘Starry Night‘ version of the pendant, with the added diamonds, but I’d need to see higher quality photos to confirm. (NEW)

EARRINGS: Kate repeated her Cartier Trinity earrings, with the three interlocking hoops in different tones of gold.
