Kate Middleton rewears glittering gold Alexander McQueen gown for 2020 BAFTAs

On Sunday the 2nd of February 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the annual BAFTA awards at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

BAFTA, which stands for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, is a charity that supports and celebrates talent in the film, games and TV industries.

The organisation’s mission is to bring the best work in those industries to public attention and support the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally.

During the ceremony, William (who is President of BAFTA) delivered a speech, joking about how many winners have portrayed members of his family.

After, the couple met with all 27 BAFTA winners, including Micheal Ward, the winner of the Rising Star Award.

Kate’s outfit:

Kate’s glittering gown is by Alexander McQueen.  It features gold flowers embroidered onto cream-coloured sheer fabric. Additional floral motifs, embroidery and sequins decorate the gown’s sleeves, neckline and bust.

Recognise the dress?  That’s because Kate first wore it during a visit to Malaysia in 2012 (shown below).  The couple visited the country during the Royal Tour of East Asia and the Pacific.

The ‘re-wear’ was intentional, at the request of BAFTA who issued guests with a ‘sustainable fashion guide’ before the ceremony. The guide encouraged attendees to re-wear something from their closet, hire an ensemble, buy something second hand or support sustainable fashion brands that use eco-friendly materials. This was part of the organisation’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality this year.

In 2020, Kate had the sleeves modified. She had them slimmed and lined with cream fabric:

Kate carried a coordinating gold glitter clutch bag to the awards ceremony.  It looks like it’s the Marano clutch by Anya Hindmarch

The Duchess owns the bag in dark blue too.

The glittering box clutch features gold-tone hardware, creme suede lining and a push-lock closure on the top.  The bag originally retailed for £350 ($595) at Net-A-Porter where it is now sold out.  You can find the piece in ‘Anthracite’ at The Outnet for £192 ($275).

It’s always tricky to identify Kate’s heels under long flowing gowns. The Twitter community thinks she’s wearing a pair of Jimmy Choo’s Romy pumps.  The Duchess owns the shoe in a number of colours and heel heights (at least six by my count!)

The Italian-made pumps feature an elegantly pointed toe and a 100mm / 4-inch heel. You’ll find the shoe in several different colours at Net-A-Porter.com.

Kate’s new necklace and earrings are from the Van Cleef and Arpels ‘Magic Alhambra Collection‘.

They feature the company’s signature Alhambra motif in mother of pearl attached to yellow gold chains. The earrings retail for £5,400 ($6,200) while the necklace costs £7,850 ($8,950).

Finally, Kate wore a yellow-coloured ring.  She’s owned the piece for over ten years and has photographed wearing it on many occasions.  Unfortunately, no further information is known about the piece.

This is Kate’s best dress. Brings out all her good points. Is it essentially two dresses, a cream lining with a twisted sweetheart lining and a chiffon over’dress??
